The Infamous Alexa Incident
So, here's the story of how I accidentally became the most hated person at a party - without even attending it. Yes, buckle up, folks, because this tale is going to be a wild one.
It was just another Friday night, and I was chilling at my place, trying to finish up some last-minute work. My friend, let's call him "Rob", was hosting a party at his apartment. Now, Rob's parties have a reputation of being wild, but this one was supposed to be a bit more calm and relaxed - just a small gathering of close friends. I was invited but decided to sit this one out because I was swamped with work.
A few hours into the night, I got a call from Rob. He was in panic mode, screaming about how the party was a disaster. Amidst the chaos, all I could make out was "You need to save the party, man!" Knowing I couldn't physically be there, I got an idea and decided to send over my trusty sidekick - Alexa.
I remotely started playing some house music on Rob's connected Alexa device, hoping it would liven up the party. Now, here's where things spiraled out of control. In my defense, I was just trying to pull a fun prank - I set the volume level to gradually increase every five minutes.
At first, it started working. The party picked up, and people started having fun again. That was until the volume got too loud. Rob tried to shout over the music to ask Alexa to stop, but she couldn’t hear him over the booming bass. Some of his guests tried unplugging her, but Rob had secured her on a high shelf to protect her from any drunken mishaps.
Unable to control the music, a mild panic set in. The neighbours started complaining about the noise, and someone called the cops. Meanwhile, I was oblivious to the chaos I had inadvertently caused, peacefully finishing my work at home.
The next day, I woke up to a series of missed calls and angry texts. Turns out, the cops had arrived and shut down the party. And as it turned out, I had saved a party that I wasn't even at - by getting it shut down. Rob was ticked off, but he couldn’t deny it was a memorable party.
To this day, my friends bring up the "Alexa Incident" as a cautionary tale whenever we discuss party plans. And I, well, I've learned to never trust myself with remote access to an Alexa device.
